Oregonians Shine at the Paris Olympics: A Celebration of Homegrown Talent

The Paris Olympics have concluded, but the excitement continues for residents of Oregon, where many athletes with ties to the state achieved remarkable success on the world stage. From gymnastics to shot put, Oregonians played pivotal roles in bringing home medals and making history.

Jade Carey: A Star in Gymnastics

Jade Carey, an undergraduate student at Oregon State University, was instrumental in securing a gold medal for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team. Her performance contributed to the team’s “redemption tour,” alongside gymnastics legend Simone Biles. Carey also showcased her individual talent by earning a bronze medal in the vault competition, solidifying her status as one of the sport’s top performers.

Controversy Surrounding Jordan Chiles

Vancouver’s Jordan Chiles found herself in the midst of a controversy when the Court of Arbitration for Sport stripped her of the bronze medal she won in the floor exercise. The decision was based on a late appeal that placed her ahead of Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu, which was submitted just four seconds after the deadline. U.S. officials are currently appealing this decision.

Ryan Crouser Makes History

Ryan Crouser, a native of Boring, Oregon, made history by defending his gold medal in the shot put event. His winning throw of 75 feet, 1¾ inches was nearly three feet farther than his closest competitor, teammate Joe Kovacs. Crouser’s victory marks his third consecutive gold medal in the sport, making him the first athlete ever to achieve this feat.

Portland Thorns Players Contribute to U.S. Soccer Victory

Portland Thorns players Sophia Smith and Sam Coffey were part of the U.S. women’s soccer team that secured their first Olympic gold since 2012. The team’s 1-0 victory over Brazil in the final was a thrilling culmination of their hard work and determination. Smith was particularly notable for scoring the game-winning goal against Germany in the semifinals.

Other Notable Oregonians

Several other athletes with Oregon connections also excelled at the Olympics:

Pieter Quinton

A Grant High School alumnus, Quinton won a bronze medal as part of the U.S. men’s eight rowing team.

Sabrina Ionescu: The former Oregon Duck and basketball star was part of the USA Basketball Women’s Olympic Team that won their eighth-straight gold, defeating France in a close 67-66 match.

Jessica Hull

The Australian runner and former NCAA champion at the University of Oregon earned a silver medal in the women’s 1,500-meter race.

Cole Hocker

Another University of Oregon alum, Hocker sprinted from fifth to first place in the final lap to win gold in the men’s 1,500-meter race.

Jaida Ross

A shot-put star from Medford, Ross narrowly missed the podium with a throw of 63 feet, 3¼ inches, just 1½ inches shy of a medal.

These athletes have not only brought pride to the Beaver State but have also left an indelible mark on the history of the Olympics, demonstrating the strength and talent that Oregon continues to produce.
